Spring wardrobe time!Fashion magazines are fat with luscious, tempting and pricey little tidbits that create a slight drool in the corner of our mouths. If that lottery ticket would just come through we would be so exquisitely adorned for the season—or would we? Spending untold amounts on fashion is not as cool as it once was—extravagance is passé.
We at Aging But Dangerous have decided that as we stare blankly into our closets looking for some thread of inspiration from the frocks that we have become way to familiar with, that there is still hope among “old friends”. Even if we replaced these loyal companions we would not (could not) spend the money to replace them with the same quality. To look fabulous without spending a ton of money, just recombine what you already have. Ask a friend with great taste to come over and help you. Offer to trade them something that you have or are good at, such as elegant baked desserts, fresh herbs from the garden, marketing help for their new business, the latest good book recommendations, etc. Barter is the new gig. (Gay friends can be great at this. Straight guys just want to see you in your underwear.)
It takes hours to accomplish this rather formidable task, so plan the biggest part of a day to do a double season (spring and summer). Be brave, try combinations that might seem scary at first blush. Put a blue chambray shirt with just about anything, combine pink and orange, resurrect an old pair of earrings to make a gutsy statement (look at Diane Sawyer’s earrings).
Keep track of all of your new concoctions, if you don’t write the details down you will loose this entire exercise–record your creative genius–it is fleeting. Think of it as Garanimals for adults. Make a list of wonderful new accessories that you need to track down to add enough pizzazz to your old favorites that you swoon just to think about how great you are going to look. I found a wonderful hot pink belt at Target last week to spice up my very old and slightly drab Chanel jacket—it looks awesome.
The Devil Wears Prada – And You Can Too! Another great wardrobe stretcher is www.weartodaygonetomorrow.com where designer frocks for a miriad of events are available for rent, and they are incredibly affordable. Approximately 90% OFF of retail. Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi are just some of the designer names you will encounter. They also have less expensive choices. When you compare the price of renting to the cost of buying one of these puppies, it is a slam dunk. Rent. For proms, weddings, a great party or a hot once-in-a-lifetime date, this is your ticket to “chic but cheap” paradise.
(Closet Elite was our favorite resource for renting, but we can’t find it anymore. if you know what happened let us know.)
No matter where you live renting is easy, since it’s an online service. Candee Lynn Wilson (you know . . . the Saving Lady) said about reputable online renting services: that “it’s like Netflix for designer dresses!” You choose a dress, they mail it to you, you mail it back in a prepaid pre-addressed mailer. You can choose your shipping method, and they don’t over-inflate shipping costs. Sounds as smooth as that vintage silk charmeuse blouse that was just dragged out of the back of the closet for reassignment.
