AN UNCOMMON UNION

Nothing jazzes us up like women doing what they damn well please.  When we discovered “Women On Wheels® we got all goose bumpy—this was a group of women we had to know more about.  Little did we know the impact this group was having on so many people, and at so many different levels of our society?

Women On Wheels® is a national organization that was founded in 1982 for the express purpose of uniting women motorcyclists for recreation, education, mutual support and recognition, and to promote a positive image of motorcycling.  We welcome all women motorcycle enthusiasts whether 18 or 80.   We ride all brands, all sizes, and all styles of motorcycles.  We welcome riders, passengers, and future riders to join us.”-- says their home page.

When we logged on to their web site we immediately felt included.   This appeared to be  a group of X chromosome humans on 2 wheels, that wanted to be our friends.  “WOW” felt like a perfect acronym for these “biker women”.

Our introduction to WOW came from what some might consider an unlikely connection—CornerSTONE, a not-for-profit organization that deals with victims of domestic abuse.  Their mission; “CornerSTONE’S mission is to prevent domestic abuse.   We provide children and adults a continuum of service that builds sustainable self-reliance and revives the human spirit.  We educate, advocate, and lead the way to social change.”

Aging But DANGEROUS was founded on a passion that we, (Jean and Suzanne), wanted to help women over 50 who needed an advocate in their changing lives.  CornerSTONE seems to fit perfectly as the benefactor of the “Sponsor a Skydiver” campaign, the charity portion of our Martini Jump Skydive.  IPV, (intimate partner violence) is on the rise in women over 50 and is expected to increase significantly as baby boomers continue to retire.  We all can make a difference in this statistic.

CornerSTONE also fits perfectly with WOW as they “Ride For Survival” on August 22, 2010 to help fund the “Day One” initiative.  Day One is a statewide program of CornerSTONE that provides immediate access to safety for battered women and their children.

There seems to be a manage-a-trois of sorts forming here.  Three dynamic, unique and sometimes a little bit wacky organizations that have a lot of mutual admiration and have the desire to share their good fortune with each other.  Isn’t that what ménage-a-trois means???

We, at ABD feel honored to be supporting each of these great organizations that serve women’s needs so well.  Mark your calendars for:
• August 22—fun with a bunch of brave biker women; scenic ride, prizes, entertainment, etc, at the Medina Entertainment Center on that Saturday morning.

• August 28—wacky women over 50 jump from a perfectly good airplane into a festival of vendors, games, food, martinis and total fun.

ALL for the benefit of CornerSTONEwww.cornerstonemn.org  who needs women like us to help support those women that are too terrified at times to help themselves.  Ladies—start your engines…..
