Woman, 90, skydives to prove age is just a number (Feb., 2, 2002)Marni Evans literally “dropped in” for her 90th birthday party Saturday afternoon, jumping from an airplane cruising over her farm at 12,000 feet. She said she wanted to show her friends that age is just a state of mind, even when you’re nearing the century mark. http://www.173rdairborne.com/amazingpara.htm
We love Marni–she is what Aging But Dangerous is all about. Da Vinci sketched the design for the first parachute in 1485, (which by the way works), but it took Jean Ketcham another 500+ years to try the slightly updated version available today. She loved it!!
Somehow this breathtaking thrill has become a right of passage, a symbol of undying youth. Whether your President Bush (senior), or Jean’s dad, who jumped at 91, if you want to show the world that life can be exciting at any age–JUMP!
As Jean informed friends, including the Aging But Dangerous Modeling Squad and members of our online community of her upcoming rise and rapid decent requiring a parachute, she had a surprising response, “we want to do it too”, actually came out of their mouths. Not mine. You can bet your life that this adventure requires trust. Skydive Twin Cities, the premier skydiving center in the Midwest, has earned Jean’s trust. Thirty four years of teaching and accompanying students when they take that very frightening step from the security of an airplane to the open sky, has produced some amazing stories and a lot of satisfaction. Just go to their website and read what people say—this must be a very empowering experience. www.skydivetwincities.com
When Jean jumped at 60 years of age, with her dad, she muttered a reluctant “no”, “no” as she and her instructor neared the open door of the airplane. He thought she said “go”, “go”, and she began her exhilarating 14,000 foot drop. Jean free fell 10,000 feet or so in approximately 17 seconds, starting at 70 to 80 mph, and then accelerating to over 100 mph. She fell 174 feet per fabulous second and loved the invigorating rush. Could we say it was airgasmic?
Do you want to have this awesome experience by joining Jean as she does her 70th birthday jump on Saturday, August 28th at the Dropzone in Baldwin, WI, (about 30 min outside Minneapolis)? Skydive Twin Cities is our skydive partner. They will answer ALL your questions.
Aging But Dangerous will do another one of its Mega Parties with tons of fun stuff and great martinis, should you need to quell the anxiety of a friend or family member approaching you from thousands of feet in the air. (This event will officially be known as the Martini Jump.) We hope to have a live video feed to a giant screen on the ground which will broadcast live and record either your extascy (or your terror) to all attending.
Oh, and Jean’s dad wants to jump with her again, at the age of 101, (but his 98 year old wife won’t let him.) She is sooo conservative.
